What does an IT manager do?

IT managers are responsible for managing and overseeing the company’s technology infrastructure. They ensure that the IT infrastructure is used effectively, coordinate activities related to the technology, and oversee changes within the network.

Some of your duties as an IT manager include:

  • Managing all aspects of a company’s information technology (IT) operations. This entails assessing current systems and identifying new ones that can help your company achieve its goals, as well as developing policies regarding security and privacy.
  • You’ll also be responsible for assigning staff members to specific projects, training them on how to use new technologies, providing them with access to computers and other equipment needed for their jobs, overseeing their work performance and helping them improve it if necessary (such as by giving feedback).
  • Develop or maintain software applications or purchase new hardware when needed.

Responsabilities

IT Managers are responsible for ensuring that the technological resources are used effectively to meet business objectives, as well as coordinate IT activities.

  • Ensure IT strategy, budgeting and execution are aligned with business objectives.
  • Direct and coordinate activities related to information technology (IT) operations within an organization, including: implementation of company’s strategy; management of technology infrastructure; utilization of computing resources; maintenance of network security; creation of policies that govern use of computer systems.
  • Support efforts aimed at complying with regulations regarding information security, privacy and confidentiality regulations.
  • Monitor performance indicators such as hardware performance metrics in order to identify problems before they become critical issues affecting the operation of business applications – this is often referred to as “proactive” management rather than “reactive” management due largely in part because it is less expensive than reacting after something has already occurred (as most businesses do).

IT Managers are also known as CIOs and Chief Information Officers.

You may also hear this job title referred to as Chief Information Officer (CIO) or CTO.

These jobs are synonymous with IT Manager, and all of them describe a person who is responsible for the entire IT department.

In essence, that means he or she has much broader responsibilities than a regular employee and acts as a sort of liaison between upper management and lower-level technical staff.

The CIO can be thought of as the boss of all things technical within an organization, including security systems and information technology infrastructure (such as servers).

CIOs must therefore have extensive knowledge about how these systems work together in order to ensure smooth operation when issues arise.

They must also oversee budgeting efforts from both internal and external sources so that money is spent appropriately on software updates or hardware purchases when necessary—and they must recommend ways in which new technologies will benefit their company’s bottom line while staying within budgetary constraints set by higher-ups at headquarters.

Do I Need a Degree?

You don’t need a degree to get a job in IT, but you do need to work hard. You can learn everything there is to know about computers and technology by taking online classes, reading books and magazines, watching YouTube videos and webinars—and all of it will be free.

Don’t worry about the cost of getting an education either; many schools offer scholarships for people who want to go back to school and earn their degrees, so be sure to check out those opportunities if you’re able-bodied enough for that kind of commitment!
